GLP-1 Muscle Loss: How to Keep Your Muscle

Not all weight loss is fat. On a GLP-1, a real share can come from muscle — and that's a problem for your strength, your metabolism, and your face.

Educational only, not medical advice. Check with your doctor before starting exercise.

Why you lose muscle

Rapid weight loss while eating very little burns lean tissue alongside fat. Lost muscle is a major reason faces look gaunt (see Ozempic face), metabolism slows, and weight is easier to regain.

The three levers

  • Protein — the building blocks. Hit your target; see what to eat on a GLP-1.
  • Resistance training — the signal to keep muscle.
  • Recovery — sleep and rest let muscle hold.

Protein without training still loses muscle; training without protein has nothing to build with. You need both.

A minimum-effective routine

Three short sessions a week: lower body (squat, hinge, lunge), upper body (press, row, push-up), and full body (carries, step-ups, bands). No gym required — bands and dumbbells cover it. Even two sessions beat zero.

Pace matters too

Losing faster than ~1%/week increases muscle loss. See how to prevent Ozempic face. Keeping muscle also helps loose skin by filling the frame underneath.
